The choice of a fireplace must not be made only on aesthetic criteria or power consuption. It’s important also to evaluate if the heat distribution in the house is efficient, smooth and silent. How heat is distributed?
The hot air is distributed by:
- Natural convection: it is the oldest method, that of the old fireplaces, where air movement is given simply by the difference in air temperature (hot-cold), making a slow and not necessarily uniform heat, but absolutely silent.
- Forced convection: it is the versatile method, that of the latest generation fireplaces, because it allows you to enjoy the benefits of natural convection system and simultaneously it accelerates the heating times of the adjacent rooms. To obtain this it’s necessary that the fireplace is equipped with a centrifugal fan. The application of the fans doesn’t increase the thermal power of the device, but increase the volume of distributed air, greatly reducing the heating time.
In a centrifugal fan, the air flow is diverted from the impeller: the fan is placed in a structure called “scroll”, able to condition the flow in a precise direction and to increase the pressure, at the expense of the flow rate. The air is then diffused more rapidly in the environment, through air filtration grids.
The problem of noise
As we said above, in a home fireplace installed, one must consider also the bother linked to noise of its internal components.
Of a fan, you perceive both the direct sound of the motor and the air displacement caused by the blades, but also the noise caused by the reflection of the environment in which the fan is placed: usually the channeling walls inside the fireplace in part absorb noise, but in part they reflect it, causing the annoying glare phenomenon, that’s more accentuated as the channeling walls are smooth and hard.
The noise of a fan, therefore, is more noticeable the greater the rotation speed of the blades is. Moreover, the greater the rotation speed of the blades is, the greater the vibration generated by air vortices on the funnel walls is, especially when the fireplace has been built with little accuracy.
